Opening Day

Today is the earliest Opening Day ever.

It doesn't feel like baseball weather.

But here we are.

The Mets continued their Opening Day winning ways--they beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4. They are 37-20 despite losing their first eight Opening Day games  .

Lots of contributors today. Cespedes, Nimmo, Rosario, Plawecki, Gonzales, Bruce--of course Noah Syndergaard with 10 strike-outs.

Rookie manager Mickey Callaway was the first Mets manager to win his first game in NY since Jeff Torborg did it in 1992.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

The news today left the win bittersweet.

Artist Date

It's hard to remember the last time I took myself out on an artist date, but I did it today. I had about two-and-a-half hours between two tutoring appointments today.

My first appointment was in Barnes and Noble. Afterwards, I browsed for about 20 minutes and bought an Art Journaling.magazine. I bought myself lunch at Panera Bread, a Thai salad with chicken. Panera is in a shopping center with Home Goods and Michael's. I bought some little things at Home Goods (candles, picture frames, napkins and a spoon rest.) I also got a roll-up traveling bed for Lola. Next I went to Michael's. I got a few packages of stickers and some glue. Maybe my purchases will inspire me to work on some ATC's or my art journal.

For Spike

He came to live with us on March 24, 2002, and he changed our lives. I've written about anniversaries with Spike mantimes before.

Can't let the day to go by without celebrating him. We love you Spike

Nor'Easter Number Four

is coming sometime tomorrow night through Wednesday. Another one may be approaching on Sunday.

Mother Nature's payback is too much. Please stop.

What's Cooking?

I mentioned in an earlier post that I made marinara sauce last week.

The next day I made chicken broth. I had bought two rotisserie chickens on Monday with a plan to make chicken orzo soup. After I made the broth, I had the idea to try something different--I found this recipe.I changed it a little--we don't have zucchini--plus Jeff hates it. I used about three cups of  broth (not the five cups the recipe called for) but full amount of farro, lentils and spinach/kale blend. It was a success; I'll definitely make it again. Next time, if I continue to use petite lentils, I'll add them to the broth later. The lentils had completely dissolved.

Saturday, St Patrick's Day, we had Guinness Beef Stew. Jeff and I chopped all the vegetables and steak, and I cooked it a little later. Again, I made a few adjustments to the recipe, but it still worked.

We finished the soup, but have extra broth, sauce and stew for this week's meals.

Books Three Through Five

Relic
Reliquary
Mount Dragon

All by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. My brother Jim lent me these books.

I started with the first novel Relic. One of the blurbs compared it to Alien and Jurassic Park. I read both novels and liked them, and had my brother's recommendation. OK, it's about a monster lurking under the Museum of Natural History. But it's so much more than that: biology, evolutionary theory, politics, and detective work with a strong set of characters. One Friday afternoon I read for two to three hours straight: I had to finish the book. Dinner and chores could wait. I haven't felt that driven to finish a book in a long time.

Reliquary--a sequel to Relic. I wanted to read this before Mount Dragon, to return to Margo, D'Agosta and Pendergast. I was intrigued by the world of underground New York.

Mount Dragon: What's really going on at a mysterious research facility deep in the New Mexico dessert? Another page-turner that had me intrigued until the end.

A re-read: I Capture the Castle. One night Jeff and I went to bed early. I wanted to read, but didn't want to start something new. I grabbed my old copy of I Capture the Castle; I skipped parts, but read most of it.

What next? I still have my Christmas book: Lincoln in the Bardo. I have two other books that were leant to me: The Elegance of the Hedgehog and The Blind Contessa's New Machine.

Happy Pi Day!

It didn't click when I wrote the date in today's journal entry. I must have needed more coffee. When I pulled out my workout notebook at the gym, I realized it's the 30th anniversary of Pi Day

It's also Albert Einstein's birthday, and this year marks the death of Stephen Hawking.

Cosmic Karma

Today we're dealing with our third Nor'easter in a week-and-a-half. I can't help but wonder if it's payback for that 70 degree day two weeks ago. Lola and I walked the Norwalk River Valley Trail for two hours that day. It feels so long ago.

I only have to leave our place to take Lola out. I went grocery shopping yesterday, and will make marinara sauce today. I also have several indoor chores: cleaning, organizing, work emails and reports.

I need to start chopping veggies.

Incommunicado

Not really, no one is keeping me from communicating with others. I'm self-incommunicado, I guess. "Incommunicado" has an air of mystery to it. It's more exotic than saying I haven't posted in three weeks.

I haven't written in my journal much either. I've had only one full (i.e. three-page) journal entry since the date of my last blogpost.

I don't understand why I haven't been posting/writing. I have things to write about. I even started a post on February 26th, but couldn't even be inspired enough to finish on a 70 degree day.

I just have to get started again. Small steps.
