Jeopardy: Another Try

Tonight I took the Jeopardy Test to be a show contestant. I think I did pretty well. Since the first time I took the test back in 2013, I discovered The Jeopardy Fan. It looks like I got 42/50 correct.

I don't know how many I got right in 2013 when I was contacted for an audition. Last year I think I got about 33 correct and heard nothing. So 42 sounds good.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Word Play: Spelling Bee

When I was in law school, I heard that law students were into crossword puzzles. I wasn't one of them. I'll do an occasional crossword puzzle, but don't seek them out. A former co-worker used to do The New York Times crossword each day. He'd often leave them on my desk when he needed help with the film or television questions.

I'm more of a trivia fan (guess that's why I try to get on Jeopardy) and word search games like Boggle. I'm also a big fan of (the non-word game) Yahtzee.

My new favorite game is Frank Longo's Spelling Bee in The New York Times Magazine. It took me a few tries to warm up, but I now look forward to it every Saturday. It's something that I do over a number of days. My results have been classified as genius for the past few month or so.

I've been enjoying that.

Jeopardy: Second Try

Tonight I took the Jeopardy online test for a second time; the first was over two years ago.

The test seemed much harder this time. There were a few questions that I just didn't know, a few more that I didn't remember in the 15 second limit: e.g. catalytic converter.

I thought I did pretty well two years ago. This time, I think I blew it.

I just have to wait and hope.

In Jeopardy

When I auditioned for Jeopardy last May, the show reps told us we could be called to appear as early as August and would be eligible as contestants for about a year-and-a-half after our auditions.

Apparently Jeopardy has started its 30th year (another anniversary.) It is bringing back champions from the last three decades. I like the idea, but realize that it makes it less likely that I'll be called in as a contestant.

I'm still hoping.

This. Is. Jeopardy: The Audition

On Tuesday, I went into Manhattan for my Jeopardy audition. I had previously taken an online test, filled out the application and came up with five interesting bits of information that Alex Trebek can ask me about it I ever get that far.

About 19 of us arrived for the 9 AM audition. Jeopardy personnel took photos of us, discussed and showed videos about game rules and procedures. We took a 50 question quiz. After that, we played mock games with three contestants each which included contestant interviews.

We left the audition without knowing how we did on the test, in the mock game or in the interviews. I think I did well overall. I did hit the signaling device too soon and made a wrong answer. 

Apparently, we are all put in a pool; I'm sure they ranked us as TV contestants in some way. They took notes on our interviews and made suggestions to people who spoke too quietly.

I wish I had taken notes on the exact numbers, but getting to the audition is a great accomplishment. People in my group came from as far as Ohio and Virginia. I'm lucky to be only an hour away from Manhattan.

Of course, I hope to be asked out to Hollywood. (I'll worry about the time and expense then--if I get the chance.)

If nothing else, I have a Jeopardy pen, Jeopardy ear buds and a great experience.

This. Is. Jeopardy. Part Two

In January, I took the online Jeopardy test. Unfortunately, I didn't get score results. I thought if I had done well, I would have heard back in a week or two. Since I didn't hear anything, I figured that I hadn't done well enough.

But, I was wrong. Today I received an invitation to audition for a spot as contestant. I'll get the specifics after I RSVP, which I quickly did. My date and time is May 21 at 9 AM.

I am psyched about this opportunity.  Now, I have to figure out a study plan.

I usually do a good job playing Jeopardy at home with the TV. Last year I thought I'd take the online Jeopardy test, but I missed the deadline. Not this year: I took the online test this evening.

The test consists of 50 questions. You have to answer each within 15 seconds. I thought I did pretty well. I remembered one answer after the time limit (went blank on The Hunger Games.) There were a few others I didn't know and a few I guessed on.

The most frustrating part is that they do not give you your score. You have to wait and see if the Jeopardy people contact you for further consideration.

Damn, it's like going applying for a job. You send your resume and cover letter out and may never hear back.
